I have a friend in the Lodi, CA area whose daddy has ALS. She said he did not qualify for Hospice Services until he was 6 months from his "expiration date"????? Here in Alabama, ALS is automatic justification for hospice service as it is always a terminal illness, symptoms, pain, and disabilities are constantly changing, and the families/caregivers are in dire need of help!!!!! How can Hospice refuse to help such a patient/family going through the most horrible disease ever!!!????????

Hammond, there could be the exception... look at Stephen Hawking, he has had ALS for 50 years.

I realize each case is different, with different timetables. It is up to the Hospice doctor to assign Hospice to someone. Apparently your friend's father isn't ready at this point in time.

A person with diagnosed ALS is automatically accepted for Medicare starting from the First month his disability payments start, under or over 65. Maybe this bit of info will help. Make sure when submitting disability forms that they put he has ALS / LOU GERIGS DISEASE on the form!
