I took my 81 year old father to get full dentures today. He had gauze in his mouth from old tooth extractions. When we got home he pulled out the gauze and flushed it down the toilet. Then we realized the bottom denture had come out with the gauze and was flushed too! So he had new dentures for about 30 minutes before accidentally flushing the lower ones! Thought you all would enjoy that story. But anyway, it will be about 2 to 3 weeks before they can get him a new lower denture, so he's going around with no bottom teeth. I just feel so bad for him. I got him lots of soft food, and I guess we just have to deal with it. Any suggestions or amusing stories or thoughts that might help me get him through the next few weeks with no bottom teeth?

I had a male friend who always removed his dentures when he ate. He was also addicted to very controlled pain meds - but he always managed to get extras. So one day while very high, sharing a snack with his 4 year old grand-daughter, she spotted his dentures lying on the table. She just casually picked them up, took them outside to the fenced area where he kept the dog, and she buried his teeth. He went almost a year without any teeth. One day while checking on his dog, he noticed a huge hole the dog had dug. He looked into the hole, and -whatta-ya-know-!!! he was staring down at his dentures. This dumbass took them to the kitchen sink, scrubbed them with Dawn, and put them back in his mouth. His wife never let him kiss her again.

There was the time not only were my husband’s dentures missing, but also his hearing aide, and his glasses. I was trying not to lose my mind while searching for them.
Once, we found his dentures in the freezer.
A few months ago, we found his glasses that had been missing for three years. They were in the bushes in front of our house where he had fallen.

Oh my!!!

Reminds me way back when I lost a digital camera. Looked everywhere for the longest time. 2 years later lost the new one. Finally found it under the car seat (the first place I looked). It was lying there next the other camera.

The look on my DH's face when I brought them both inside 🤣🤣

I certainly feel for you and your Dad. My mother is in a Nursing Home and they called me one night to say that she couldn't find her lower denture. I told them that it often irritates her gums and she would take them out and put them in her pocket. She often would wrap them in tissues too. She is 88 with Alzheimer's. Well they never located her denture until about a week later when she stood up and the cushion in her Wheelchair pulled loose. The denture fell on the floor and broke. Apparently she had been sitting on it all week. They say her gum is to bad to support a new denture so she has to go without. I think they just don't want to pay for another. At least you have something to joke about with your Pop.

Boost, Muscle Milk or Ensure beverages for added nutrients. You can blender food for awhile, meat/potato/veg stews, etc. Thank you for caring so much and for understanding that accidents or 'dementia happens!' Sorry & Take care!

I can relate to this so much. I understand the need for teeth but until a good solution is found to keep the teeth and don't lose them - and I assure you they will get lost over and over again if someone is so stupid as to keep replacing them. I feel, you buy them and provide them and you do everything you can to instill in ALL PEOPLE they must be monitored and kept safe - but that is NOT going to happen. So, sorry to say, YOU LIVE WITHOUT THEM AND DO NOT REPLACE THEM. If you want to be an endless money machine, fine - but otherwise, do not replace them.

I can relate, my mom used to take her dentures out, wrap them in napkins and couldn't remember who took them, always swore it wasn't her but the devil took it...all day long!
Caregiver finally had mom give it to her & she would hold it till morning.
What is it with napkin hoarding, mom has tons in her purse!!

Imho, things like this happen - the loss of dentures, hearing aides, eye glasses and the like. I always knew when my late mother wasn't wearing her partial (denture). Have a better day.

Just try to keep smiling. It's like having child accidents!🙃 Hate to tell you, there will be more. I was think, now what was it like this that I did when I was little, and when they didn't have much $. What did I loose or throw away??? 😁 What goes around comes around. LOL

and that is why we did not get mom (95) dentures; hard enough to try to find where she "hid" her glasses from one hour to another...lol

My husband was in Skilled nursing after a hospital visit. He called me at home asking me if I have his teeth. Unfortunately he has a habit of taking them out and wrapping them in a napkin not the case they came in. I guess he put them on his dinner tray and they were trashed. Now that he’s home he keeps asking for his teeth. Oh boy!!!

OMG that is so hysterical! I have dentures too but they are uppers. Sure I have amusing stories, well, my father had gone for surgery to remove a melanoma mole on his head, and they wrapped his whole head up in gauze (for a visual, it looked like a carvel ice cream cone on his head) they told him not to touch it! But in the middle of the night he unwrapped the whole thing in his sleep! He never liked anything on his head, so he ripped it off! They had to put it back on the next day, and he did the same thing! , then one day my mother was going to a bridal shower, and as she always lies my father's clothes out on the bed for him to wear (He had dementia) he thought the blouse was for him, so he put it on, and he said "Is this what you want me to wear?!) we nearly spit our pancakes out, he looked too cute and confused. Memories...enjoy them...i really miss my dad...

It happens to kids, too.

Two of my kids were missing their permanent incisor teeth, so they wore retainers with two false teeth on them until they were old enough to get implants.

My youngest had a tendency toward carsickness, and more than once I had to pull over and let him get sick by the side of the road. (Sorry for the visuals.)

One winter afternoon in Denver we were driving home after dropping off some friends at the airport. On the way home, my son got that "feeling," so I pulled off the highway, and he took care of business in a snow bank on the side of the road next to a large field.

When we got home an hour later he was feeling better. My daughter saw his gap-toothed grin and asked him where his retainer was. Yup-- sitting in a snowbank 50 miles away.

I had to drive back there the next day and try to remember exactly where I'd pulled over in the dark next to a field with no distinct landmarks.

In the end, I was grateful that orthodontists had started making retainers in wild neon colors instead of the flesh color they used when I was younger, because 100 yards away, there on the top of the snow sat a lime green retainer with zebra stripes and two teeth on it frozen solid into a pile of -- well, you can imagine.

After digging it out of the snow, I brought it to the orthodontist to be sanitized, and he said it was the best retrieved retainer story he'd heard, and he'd had some doozies.

I went on to retrieve those things from multiple trash cans over the years, too, as my kids would wrap them in a napkin before eating, then throw them out by mistake.

I can't tell you how glad I am that they're now adults and fully responsible for such gaffes now!

My brother was sick and threw up losing his bottom plate in the process. They were stuck in the neck curve of the toilet so call a plumber to dismount and flip toilet on its side and get em out! Then soak in bleach water for awhile.

I have a dear friend who is in the business, as an oral surgeon. I've heard stories of crowns that popped off and were swallowed. They eventually turned up...or out as the case may be...and could be sterilized as I recall..but I guess by now the denture is going to show up in a goldfish somewhere...

I have lost more teeth than I like to acknowledge and have opted at this time to forego the denture route. It's amazing how one can manage to eat still. Check out dutch pancakes:-)

That is not funny, but that is really funny.

I was in a business negotiation for a really big contract. I had to go to the restroom and I was wearing a one piece suit, as I flushed the toilet and was buttoning up a very important button popped off and I watched in horror as it flushed so nicely.

I can relate to the sinking feelings that you all are experiencing.

Fortunately for me my girlfriend had an art gallery next door and a safety pin. I got the contract even after I told everyone why I was gone for a half hour. Everyone had a good laugh at my expense, including myself.

I think about that experience every time I hear about unintended flushings.

Give dad lots of milkshakes for the next few weeks to soothe the burn of the situation 😁
