My mom currently suffers from early onset dementia and memory loss. She currently resides in assisted living in NJ. I understand that one of the requirements for Medicaid is that you have hardly any income. But, the other physical exam part I do not understand. The facility she is currently in states that because mom does so well with maintaining her hygiene and doesn't need assistance with walking, showering, etc. that she most likely will not qualify for assisted living. The only assistance she needs is medication management, meal reminders, and reminders to make sure she is drinking fluids. Does anyone know if this is enough to qualify along with minimal income? We did do a trust and she is currently on year 3 of the 5 year lookback for NJ Medicaid. I just wish I knew that she would be able to stay there and that Medicaid would assist her financially to receive the care she needs. I have been very stressed over not knowing what will happen to her when her funds are gone and if Medicaid will approve her or not. Her doctors know she cannot live alone, but Medicaid sends out their own nurses for evaluations. Can anyone offer any advice or their experience or knowledge on this? Thank you so much!

Does the AL she is in now accept medicaid residents. In my experience, most ALs did not accept Medicaid, though I am sure there must be some exceptions. Does the Trust have assets that can be used to pay for her expenses? The criteria many services look at is the ability of the person to perform the ADLs (Activities of daily living) ... though memory care may have different criteria. Yes, they do accept Medicaid residents. The trust does have assets that we use to currently pay for her expenses. She can perform activities of daily living other than taking meds on her own, she needs reminders to eat and drink. She is not in memory care as she has early onset dementia and isn't severe enough to be in the memory care unit. Thanks for the website link! I will definitely check it out.

I just wish the website was a little more clear on if they would cover it with my mom's circumstances. If anyone has had personal experience with this, please let me know your experience. I appreciate it. I hate not knowing what will happen. And it's not like she could live with me because she needs to be watched 24/7 because she does crazy things like wandering, getting in cars with strangers, letting strangers in her house when she lived at home, withdrawing money from the bank that she had no idea what she did with it, not eating, not taking meds, not drinking enough, fainting, vomiting, falling, paranoia and anxiety, chronic phone calls, etc. the list goes on and on, but the Medicaid nurse will not know this by just doing a medical exam. I just wish there were a way to know if they would approved to pay for her in assisted living. She can't live alone and I have to work and currently live 45 minutes from where she is which is near her hospital and doctors. She also has heart disease, thyroid issues, glaucoma, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, etc. the list goes on here too, but she is physically able to get around still, walks ok with two new knee replacements, etc.
