Mother in law has been in rehab after having coronavirus and being in the hospital. She lives with my brother in law and sister in law about an hour away from us. She was supposed to come home 2 weeks ago but BIL informed my husband that she wasn’t ready yet. When my husband asked when she was coming home my BIL got nasty and just said “don’t worry about it it’s not going to cost you a dime”. The only thing it’s costing is a lot of aggravation for us! There’s an issue with him having spent the money she gave him under the five years look back. We held onto it. So the way it’s been going is we pay half her expenses and the rest is his problem. So for him to have said that and the way he’s being very closed mouth about it ... I’m left wondering what kind of help they might be able to get so that the bill is paid. He was promised 28 hours of aid 4 hours a day 7 days a week and kept complaining that he needed more than that for her. Really puzzled here and he won’t tell hubby anything about what’s going on. Any ideas anyone?

Find Care & Housing
Tell hubby to tell BIL that he will not be paying for anything until he gets information. So he can share what is going on or he can pay for the entire bill solo.

I only wish my pansy husband would go along with that but sigh he’s so afraid of his brother giving him the silent treatment!

Medicare pays 10% the first 20 days, 31 to 100 days 50 %. Some supplimentals may pay the other 50% but if not, it may be $160 a day private pay. If Mil is in the whole 100 days, then that about 12k. Unless, BIL has applied for Medicaid. Which sounds like what he has done. He maybe planning to place her into LTC.

He can’t apply for Medicaid because there would be a look back and he spent $80k of her Money and the five years isn’t over until September. So if he did that it would be a real dumb move. Then again so was spending her money! She has some kind of Medicaid that’s going to pay for 20 to 28 hours of care a week but he’s already said he can’t get more hours for her because he can’t apply for full Medicaid.

You know, you are just experienced family frustration and dynamics here. Truth is that you ARE worried about costs, and you SHOULD be concerned about them. Worrying about finances and loving someone aren't mutually exclusive.
As to the thing about getting more coverage? It CAN be done, and they often work round things in mysterious ways. When my bro was in rehab he was covered for 21 days and during that time the folks in PT said that, due to balance issues, he had come as far as he was able. HOWEVER, the doctor at the hospital wanted him in rehab for one month, until a followup scan on a brain tumor (to be sure it was benign, not growing). So they kind of fudged around with his needing more time for wound healing (a scalp wound). He was fully covered for 30 days because they did this. So they may be playing with codes and numbers, and that is the way of it all.
