My mom is living in my townhome. It's getting harder for her to use the stairs. Bedrooms are all upstairs. She bends down to do stuff and then she can't get up. She is having a hard time getting meals and doing many tasks. I'm having to go over more often and it's hard when I am working. She is still independent though. Her mind is good other than forgetting some things like names. She's diabetic and has thyroid disease so it physically hard for her. We can't afford a nice independent living apartment where she can live alone and get meals , cleaning and other help.

Find Care & Housing
There is a Foster Care program for family members. The pay is quite substantial. It is a Medicaid run program. Call your local Medicaid office to get more information. You and your mother will need to be accepted into the program and if she makes too much money over $2,000 monthly she might qualify for the frail waiver program. It is worth checking out.

Even if she could afford IL right now please consider that she won't be able to manage in it for very long...then what? Does she need to use the stairs to get to your car or out of the house? Are you planning to become her full-time caregiver when that time comes? She will eventually need more help than you can give. Medicaid in some states (like MI) do partially or fully pay for AL, so maybe check what your state covers. One of the biggest problems for seniors is loneliness, and at least in AL she will have social engagement with people her own age and interests. Otherwise, you will be IT. Lots to think about. Those who respond to you are just trying to peel back the curtain from the romanticized notions of caregiving so you can help your mom make the most realistic plan on a tight budget.

If your dad was a vet, look into benefits there also.

The only way that you can get paid is if mom pays you.
There may be some programs that might provide a caregiver. Contact your local Agency on Aging and ask if there are programs available.
In a Townhouse with stairs might not be the best option. If she is going to continue living with you a ranch home or one that has a first floor bedroom with a full bath might be a better option.
