Find Care & Housing
adamspatsyl, the vast majority of grown children who are caring for parents/in-laws do not be get..... not unless the parents/inlaws can pay you from their savings. If your Dad-in-law can do that, you would need to prepare an employment agreement and decide who will be paying the payroll taxes [there are companies you can hire to do payroll].

If your Dad-in-law is short on funds, then you can call your State's Medicaid office to see what programs are available. Each State has their own rules/regulations and how much they will pay each week, which usually isn't enough to live on :( Medicaid is funded by us taxpayers.

Also check with your local agency on aging to see what programs they have.

If Dad-in-law was in the military, you can check with the VA to see what is available.

Hope of find something, even if it help for a few hours each week. With your Dad being only 77 he could easily live for another 15 to 20 years.

Make sure that he is paying his share of costs. These are not considered income to you and they help with the increased cost of an additional adult in the home.

Caregiving payment is income to you and must be handled according to IRS rules.

It is well worth the time to find out what that looks like to avoid any future issues.
