He is 70 years old and was just diagnosed a few weeks ago, but the more we learn we have figured out he has had this at least 6 years. From reading I have seen how much he has improved with medicines and therapy in these last 3 or 4 weeks but he is still sleeping alot. He gets up for therapy(twice a week physical and speech) and to eat then lays back down. He'll get up and talk to me maybe a couple hours out of the day. He seems to have a good time sleeping he laughs and acts out stuff like trying to walk or fix things. Is this all normal part of it? I miss him and it gets lonesome. I think he is so much better but then he's still sleeping about 16 or more hours out of the day.

He was sleeping 16 to 20 hours before he was diagnosed and then he went on medication and started staying up more now he is back to sleeping alot. Last night he was moving his arms and legs in his sleep so much I thought he was going to fall so I reached out and layed my hand on his leg which usually calms him but this time he started kicking me. I had to wake him up so he would stop. His voice and his memory seem so much better though.

Great minds think alike correct? My mother is 78 and has had Parkinson's for 22 years. So she was 56 when she was first diagnosed. She does get sleepy after her morning meds but she fights sleep and/or rest during the day. Parkinson's is a disease that affects everyone differently....

Has he started medicines he hasn't been taking before? I'd suspect that first, all medicines have side effects, perhaps sleepiness is one. Also, it sounds like he could be depressed, or at least awfully sad. With everything he learns about the disease, he is also learning what he is to lose.

If you go to Parkinson.org, you will see that excessive sleeping is one of the symptoms, as is acting out dreams (not sure if that's what you were saying after "he seems to have a good time sleeping he laughs, etc.".

Seventy seems awfully young to be dealing with this. I wish y'all luck.

What medications is he on? It could be a side effect of the medications or it could be that he is mentally worn out from the diagnosis and it is just now catching up to him.
