Where to find information on fireproof bedding?

I have no information about those kinds of products. But i think you have a much bigger problem...no one should EVER smoke in bed. Everyone knows that. What is going on that your mother is doing such an unsafe thing? Dementia? Mobility issues? She can't live alone anymore. Period.

I've never dealt with this issue and don't have any good ideas, but you might start by calling DMEs. Possibly a local fire department might have suggestions as well.

Firstly there is no such thing as fireproof bedding. Synthetic materials melt if they catch on fire and will melt on whoever is in that bed at the time. Natural materials like cotton and wool and bedding that is 100% cotton or wool are flame retardant but not fire proof. But the bigger concern is that if the cigarette reaches the mattress. Mattresses are highly flammable and it won't matter what the bedding is.

898luvmymom, as per your profile I see that your Mom has lung disease, and at 90 she probably figures why bother to quit now. I know this is scary for you, but there isn't a whole lot one can do if a person wants to smoke.

Now, who is buying Mom her cigarettes? How can she afford them, as depending on what State you live in, a pack can cost up to $12.00 a pack.

Is there something else Mom can use as a substitute for her cigarettes? What about chocolate or something she really likes. If Mom says smoking relaxes her, that is true, but it is deep inhaling and strong exhaling that does the relaxing, not the cigarette. One can create the same relax feeling using a short soda straw.

Also, I think a pack of cigarettes in Australia now cost almost $40.00 a pack, yes, a pack. I believe I read this on the website The Daily Mail.I could be wrong, correct me if I am wrong.898, good luck,at her age she won't quit and as a nurse I can tell you that burns are HORRIBLE.Hurt her feelings, her tears of outrage are better than the tears of pain from burns,don't make the cigarettes available if possible.

What about trying e cigarettes? I don't know anything about them, but they run on a battery so I don't think she could set anything on fire.

Thanks to all of those who responded with helpful suggestions and further information. However, I'm concerned about the comments from a few who have asked who buys cigarettes for my mother. Although she is 90 years old, my mother is VERY adept on her computer, which is really her lifeline. She is on the computer EVERY SINGLE DAY, reads the news, has a Facebook page, enters her finances into software designed for that purpose, and keeps Excel spreadsheets regarding her medications and doctors. I bought her a computer in 1986, when the original IBM machines came out, and she has loved them ever since. She now has a new HP computer. Because she is so skilled, she orders her cigarettes online from a company who sends them to her via the mail!! So please be assured that I am NOT enabling her in this terrible habit, and that I am concerned EVERY SINGLE DAY about her welfare!! She has tried e-cigarettes, hypnosis, a quit smoking class and nothing has helped. I'm truly at my wits end!!

898luvmymom, the only thing left to do is to add an automatic sprinkler system to your Mom's house so in case there is a fire, the sprinklers will come on.
