My fil got this form at his address opened it and put it down. He didn't know what it was. I looked at it, and I was confused. It sounds like somebody is trying to put him in the nursing home! He is in rehab now. I called the business office to find out what is going on. We are taking care of him after his 120 days of rehab is over. He is mentally still there, I say get a POA, now!

The PASRR process is a requirement in all Indiana Health Coverage Programs (IHCP)-certified NFs. All residents of an IHCP-certified NF are subject to the PASRR process regardless of known diagnoses or methods of payment (IHCP or non-IHCP). Screening occurs prior to admission or when there is a significant change in the physical or mental condition of a resident (resident review or RR).

Who said he would be in rehab for 120 days? You really need to talk to his MD and PT about the prognosis.

Well, they said the first 20 days were all paid by medicare, then after that the next 100 days medicare and his supplement pay, if needed. What I don't understand, is since March 3d, he has been to ICU, hospital, more then rehab, but those days count towards his 120 days? Even though he wasn't receiving rehab? He has had two 72 hour meetings with the administrator. We have decided to call a lawyer tomorrow and set up for a POA. The girl I talked to said the administrator will make sure he knows what he is doing though. I said will apparently she thought he knew what he was doing when two days ago she let him sign off on a health administrator, in case of mental incapacity. He asked that my husband and I be POA. But, I think I will suggest adding my sister in law too.

You really need a benefits coordinator to talk to, this is more than you can sort out on your own. Do not ignore the PASSR form, get it going.

Benefits coordinator? From where? Insurance? NF? where? They told me the PASSR was standard. I called our Agency on Aging and Disabled, and she explained that it means, that he was approved to stay till July 26, if needed. I know I sound ignorant about this, but I really don't understand all of this. Even the 72 hour meeting, I asked my sil and she said it was no big deal. Then when I said she would be named health rep, I realized, it was a big deal. What do we do if my fil just wants us as POA? He is of sound mind, most of the time. Just after dialysis he gets a little "loopy" as a doctor said. I don't want hard feelings, but I want to do what he wants and what is best for him.

Most of us here are self-educated, and the rules vary from state to state. I got a lot of help from ERBC and by reading the Money and Legal articles. Go to the top of this page and click Money and Legal, Paying for Care. If dad was a wartime vet, you can also get help from the VA. Study hard.
