My mom is homebound, but is having some issues with her blood levels that her doctor wants a hematologist to check out. That would be great if she could leave the house! Is there any such thing as an in-home hematologist or one that can analyze the results from afar and offer opinion on treatment? In Illinois, Lake County.

The visiting nurse can do the blood draw and the results can be sent to a Hematologist. I have never heard of a visiting Hematologist. You would have to call a Medical Transport company (ambulance) if you cannot move her alone. It won't be cheap.

Hm! Well that sucks. He who wants the consult, has to arrange for it to happen would normally be my view. Does the GP have any other bright ideas?

I'm not sure what your system is, but over here I have had some success by shmoozing up to specialists' personal secretaries - they control the diaries and have the ear of their respective Gods-in-white-coats. Can you get hold of the right phone numbers to sneak round the back, metaphorically speaking?

That's what we thought! She's getting the blood draws through a separate phlegbotomist (sp?), but whenever we ask about having them analyzed, everyone says it's a liability issue for that -- she has to be seen in person?!

Phlebotomists only do draws as ordered by the MD. Just like Pharmacists only dispense drugs with an Rx. If she lived in a Nursing Home, they would transport her to the doctor's office. That would be your other option.

I'll admit I've never heard of this actually being done, but if you don't ask you don't get - why not give the Haematologist a ring and ask him if he'll visit? He can only (sound shocked to the core and) say no. Oh, and charge you the earth, of course - but if it's a one off, and you'd otherwise have to arrange an expensive, nightmare journey for your mother, maybe it's worth a go? Ask her doctor if he had a particular specialist in mind, or look for a friendly-sounding one online.

Yes. We called our local hospital, Northshore about having either a visit in home or an analysis of the readings and that was a no go. Our home physician so clearly isn't meant for home care and has no recommendations other than, 'go to the hospital.' Which would have to be through the emergency room with no one to manage her care because he doesn't have hospital privileges.

I'm going to keep doing more research. At Northshore, they have home health care, but not hematology. My other idea was to have them start seeing her at home and then admit her to the hospital if they have the ability to oversee her care once she's in hospital . . . I'll find out if they do tomorrow. Thanks for all the support -- I really needed it.
