Recently mom has been having the delusion that the manager of the Apartment complex has been sneeking into my apartment and stealing her clothes, purse, ear rings, etc. I've managed to handle these delusions until today. She went to the office and tried to file a complaint against the women who runs the facilities. Thank God it's Sunday and they are closed. I fear she will confront the manager in the morning. My goal is to try to get to the manager first.

I don't really know what to tell this manager about how to respond to alleviate my moms mistaken perceptions. I know she needs to empathize with mom but not to admit to something untrue.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I'm scheduling an appointment for a consultation with her physician. But it might need to be by telephone due to COVID-19.

Yes, I would get to the manager first thing and explain that your mom has Alzheimer's and experiences delusions. Mention what the delusion is and for the manager not to argue with mom. You might convince her to say something like "they're aware of it and it won't happen again".

Can you send an email or put a letter under the office door? I think it is important to document these sorts of issues.

yes follow up with a phone call in the morning to make sure they have the information.

I worry that Mum is left unattended. I know you have things you need to do, perhaps you can get a sitter when you have to leave.

Recently 2 seniors with dementia have gone missing and not been found until too late in my community.

hdarrell, has your mom formally assigned you as her durable Power of Attorney? If not, this needs to happen before she gets a medical diagnosis of dementia. You can download forms for your state inexpensively on Legalzoom.com or Rocketlawyer.com ($40-ish). It needs to be signed in front of a notary (at the bank or city hall for free) and depending on your state laws, signed by 2 non-family witnesses. Hopefully this is all in place. At your mom's medical appointment definitely have her tested for a UTI (urinary tract infection) as this can create dementia-like symptoms in the elderly and cleared up with antibiotics. If often presents no other symptoms except behavior/personality changes and confusion. Good luck!
