I will discuss with doctor just curious how common this is. Last 5 months Mom's memory has deteriorated at a faster rate, at least in my opinion. Cognitive abilities declining the same.

I've noticed a major decline in a few weeks with my mom. Part of it has to do with her vision loss and every day seeming the same. In August she would wait in the hallway on the days I was going to visit. Now she seems surprised each time I visit. She has also started with a random vacant stare. January 2024 the geriatric doctor assured me she didn't have signs of dementia, so this has been a fast progression.

Knowing how old she is would be helpful, also if she has any other ongoing medical conditions.

Yes, do take her in for a full exam. Often dementia is confirmed as the diagnosis only after all other possible medical causes have been discounted, like a UTI, dehydration, vitamin deficiency, stroke, medication mistakes (too much, too little), thyroid problems, etc.

Everyone is different, so even if it turns out to be dementia, her trajectory of decline may not be the same as for others since her general health, quality of daily care and other variables play a part in it.

How old is she? My 92 YO father has good days and not-so-good days. You're right, it's not a linear process and the decline is hard, if not impossible, to measure.
