My sister is 17 years older than I am and has several disability issues that requires help on a daily basis. I have had her move into my home so that she is close and I can help her with walking, medications, doctor appointments, shopping, cooking, cleaning, laundry and daily companionship, which is the easy part because she’s my sister and I love her. I was told by a nurse that I should be being paid by the state (?) for being her caregiver. How do we go about doing that and begin receiving financial help for caregiver benefits?

You need to contact the Orange County department of social services, that is who administers the state program that pays for home caregivers. Your sister has qualify for IHSS (in home support services). She has qualify both medically and financially and be on medi-cal. Just keep in mind, pay is minimum wage and the state won’t pay you for full time care. If your sister is approved for IHSS, she can then hire you. You’ll have to go through an orientation and have a live scan done.
