I found CNA's were better with Mom who had alzheimers. They had certifications and also experience from working in nursing home and memory care. The unskilled housekeeping aids were not as good with Mom. They were women hired off the street to do home care. I got to where I told the agencies I only wanted CNA's sent out.

Also, the CNA's all worked 2-3 jobs and had accounts with several caregiving agencies. There was no "best" agency in my area because the same CNA's could do work for all of the agencies.

Since all of my CNA's had accounts with several agencies I opened up accounts with several agencies but mostly used one and another for backup.

The locally owned agencies seemed to treat their workers better than the national franchise companies.

The national franchise branch required several thousand dollars in up front money which was an irritant. The locally owned franchises just billed us weekly.

I was sitting with one of Mom's caregivers one day and her phone was beeping all day long. She was getting beeped for job opportunities at different rates of pay all day long from different agencies. All of my CNA's had accounts going at multiple agencies.

Whether you hire through agencies or through independents (care.com), the same workforce is paid around the same hourly rate, which is 20-25 where you live with your paying an agency 45-50 in case of theoretical thefts or slip and falls on the property.

When we were ready to hire help I went to the recommendations from this same site we are on now. We chose Tandem (in Southern California). We expected the change would require more organizational work first, it did. We are about 8 months in and for the most part the caregivers are great as is contacting the coordinating office. They extra help has been earned and appreciated!
