My husband is in memory care, but he keeps falling. He has been to the hospital and Rehab twice in the last 6 months, once for a hematoma and the current one for a broken hip which has been pinned. The memory care facility will take him back but laws prevent him from being restrained so he WILL fall again. He doesn't know he cannot walk safely without a walker or supervision, so he continuously tries to, day and night, in the rehab center where at least they can use a chair/bed alarm. He WILL fall again. What can be done?
My very elderly Dad kept falling at home, and later he kept falling at senior living. It's going to happen, there really isn't anything one can do.
I know it wouldn't be good to have him confined to a bed or a geri-recliner as his legs will really become very weak to a point where he wouldn't be able to stand up. Does he have a rolling walker which has 4 wheels? Those are so much easier to use then the type that has only 2 wheels. My Dad really loved his walker :) And good solid shoes can also help.
Alarms on chairs can help, but if the nurses/Aides are assisting another patient on a more serious issue, it would be impossible to them to get to your hubby in time.
For a couple of years I was getting telephone calls at least twice a week that either my Mom or my Dad had fallen, the calls were required by State law. Once in a while a fall required 911 so I met the EMT's at the facilities.
I'm very sorry to hear about your husband's falls. It is concerning and I wonder if they can review his medications and see if the side effects are also contributing to his falls.
My dad was weak from not eating and had fallen out of bed. I would also suggest reviewing his diet and fluid intake. I also bought him two walkers and a wheelchair so he had options to move around.
I'm so sorry, I know its hard and no wants to see their loved ones in this condition. I hope you can find something that works.
