I've finally found a wonderful full time caregiver who will work days for 40 hours a week taking are of a parent with dementia. Question: the VA will hopefully pay for Aide and Attendance for Mom's care which will be in the $800 - $1000 week cost range. Not sure how long this takes but as long as it goes through the wait will be worth it. It appears I'll need to hire a payroll company to make the payment and to do all the payments to the government. Many of the best in the profession want to be paid under the table. Any suggestions on how to handle this? My instincts are to hire only those that I can put on the payroll. Any help would be greatly appreciated in this matter .

My dad and mom received Aid and Attendance from the VA. Their benefits were deposited directly into their bank accounts. Mom is still using the benefit.
Dad passed.

VA took many months to finalize the benefits but it was worth the wait. Hang in there.

I paid the caregivers using an online app so it could be traced in case of an audit.
The sitters had to sign a Caregiver agreement from the VA and it is detailed about what services they will provide and who provides them.

You can use Cashapp(my fav), paypal or any app you like.

Thank you so much for your response. I just filed for Aid and Attendance from the VA. Mom has received funds in the past for part time help but now I'm applying for a much larger benefit because I had to hire someone for a 40 hour shift. Can you let me know how long before the VA responds to the application to become Mom's fiduciary and from there when do benefits begin. You mentioned many months...is that 6 months or longer? I have enough funds of my own to take care of Mom just curious. Once the VA deposits the funds and you pay using Cashapp is that it. Do you have to pay your help by payroll check deducting for Social Security, Medicare and the like? This is all so new to me. If you have any time to call to chat for a moment I'd love that. My number is 413-822-4742. You're the best and thank you.

I am happy to offer any help I can. I believe it was four months from the start if the application to the first direct deposit.

Once funds started getting deposited I paid the sitters through Cashapp. I did not treat it like a payroll check.

You should get back pay from the date of the application to the start of the deposits.

Since your mom used VA funding in the past and has an account maybe the process will move quicker.

I have just added more sitter time for my mom so I will need to apply for more funding also.

call The VA and ask for the judiciary department..my mom had been on aide and attendance for quite awhile…. my mom had a diagnosis of anxiety, the V A out of the blue decided she needed a judiciary. I had to set up a new account titled as such…

the VA will also answer your questions

I used a program the VA had called VIP (think it stood for Veterans In Place) and I was given a "budget" based upon my Husbands level of need, the amount of care that he required) I was told that I had to hire my own caregivers BUT there was a company in place that would do the Background check, and take care of all the paperwork for payment. All I had to do was submit the weekly time sheets. With this program I had to select at least 2 "programs" or "things" that I needed to have done. I selected Caregiver, Housecleaning. I was able to pay caregivers at the pay rate I chose (obviously the less I paid them the more hours that could be afforded given the "budget" that was assigned. But I chose to pay them more and not have to worry about caregivers that would quit.)
The interesting thing is that if I did not "spend" all that was in the monthly budget I could "bank" the extra and that could have been used towards the purchase of an accessible vehicle, or used to make the house more accessible for him. Never had to do any of that and pretty sure when he died there may have been funds remaining.
I guess what I am trying to say is also look into if the VIP program is still an active program it may provide you with even more money to pay caregivers or do things that need to get done. Combining Aid and Attendance with the VIP could help a lot.
