Ask the social worker at the VA about in home aides. We have a young man come in 15 hours a week. It gives me a chance to go out!

Have you checked with the charitable organizations around your area to see if they have any companion sitters?
Catholic charities
Jewish family services
Interfaith community services

If the doctor has said that he needs 24/7 supervisor then you don't want to leave him alone, God forbid something happened you could be in trouble. If the doctor hasn't said he needs 24/7 care, then you could get him situated in his chair with food and drink close at hand, a urinal and phone close by and go get a couple hours break.

There are senior centers that offer activities and meals that he might be qualified for.

Is there any specific thing that you are looking for or just a break?

You sound tired, great big warm hug. You are not alone even though it probably feels like it right now.

President Obama created some sort of funding for "respite care" for four hours or more. In the south suburban area of Chicago where I live, this program is administered by an umbrella organization of our local township(s). It's free but only for watchful company of the patient, no work of any kind but it's a nice break! Good luck.

Are you part of a faith community that may step up if they know your situation? Neighbors? Friends? Family? Surely Indianapolis is metro enough that there are inhome care companies like Visiting Angels or others. More details from you would help.

It's a hard situation. Can you clarify "can't find enough help"? Are there no home care agencies near you. It is more that you can't afford help? Perhaps adult day care would be a good option?
