I looked up the facility which my father is presently residing, and they were given one citation in 2016. How do I find out what the citation was for? Thanks.

This should be public information through the Dept of Health or the facility. I worked in a facility and when they were cited, the staff were informed and then told about the actions that would be taken. The facility where I worked recently burned to the ground. Four residents didn't make it. You can be sure their recent inspections and citations are going to be closely scrutinized.

Go to the Medicare website and look up the nursing home. You can see their reports and how they are rated. https://www.medicare.gov/nursinghomecompare/search.html

In my state, violations, fines, remedies, etc. are all online. If I google long term care facility violations, it comes up. There is one for Assisted Living and another one for Nursing Homes. I think it goes back several years. It's very detailed too. I was surprised that many of the violations are things that you wouldn't think about. Like, a broken fixture in the hallway, something sitting in the wrong place, paperwork errors, etc. I was shocked to read about a huge violation by one facility because a CNA picked up a food tray in the dining room! Apparently, you can't handle food, unless you are hired just for that duty. Of course, more serious violations are also listed.

You have the right to ask the facility to show you the most recent survey. They are required to let you see it. Only one citation is phenomenal! Most places have several. And they MUST correct the deficiencies after the survey.
