My grandma is 93 and has Alzheimer's... She has always been quite possessive about her things!! She has the habit of hiding her belongings not only in her cupboard but also under her bed, under the pillow etc! Nowadays she keeps thinking her things get stolen and accuses her own children for the theft!! Lately it was really embarrassing for us because she accused a guest of stealing a ring which actually was on the mattress! She thinks people steal her hair pin or scarf and she spent the whole day shouting and looking for it!! She is currently on medication and was prescribed sleeping pills for everyday! We want to know how to handle the situation because we have tried a lot and nothing seems to work! Please help!

Ignore it?

My grandma has been this way for 20 years. She doesn't have dementia, just old age. She constantly says people have taken her stuff. Even when I find her stuff sitting in her room in plain sight, she insists whoever stole it brought it back.

Teepa Snow has many videos on line that talk about Alzheimers and dementia behaviors with ideas on how to handle and redirect. Remember, the brain is broken and the person frequently cannot learn differently and honestly believes whatever story they have made up to explain why they can't remember or find something.
