Mum's care home is in Milton Keynes, her family is based in Surrey. Savings are low, near £23250. Mum is in a Dementia wing of a care home that she funds, but is nearing the protected amount of £23250 or there abouts. We need to move her closer to the family so that he visits are more frequent that just alternate weekends. Social services are putting up all barriers asking mum if she is happy where she is. We have tried looking for care home that would be funded by social services and none locally will take her on. How and what can we do, its like we have hit a brick wall...

When I hear mum and council, I think you are in England and just want to say that:

a) I love England, and

b) it is amazingly helpful to know that our problems are international, universal.

I often hear that medical care, etc is the problem in the US and that it is done better elsewhere. That may be true, but when you have dementia and alz, does it really matter where it is? It is a problem!

Good luck!!!!!

Does she have a home you could sell so that would free up additional funds?

Its tricky. you want het moved for your convenience, the council and carehomes are there for the residents not the families (thats how they will see it anyway)? and the fact that she will soon no longer be paying for her care makes it even more of a battle . Try talking to your local altzheimers society. They may be able to advise you . - best of luck. (but without POA I dont think you will get too far?)

Have you tried doing a search on the NHS.UK site. You can select the level of care and type of home you are looking for. I am not familiar with the terminology use in UK but in US we have Adult Foster Homes they are small 6-12 residents very nice family like settings. Perhaps they have these homes in Surrey. If you check my about me page you will find my blog info where I give a better description of these homes. In the US they are half the cost of nursing homes. Let me know if I can assist you. Brick walls do come down.

You are in another part of the country that I know little about.
I do not know the laws, rules & help available to you.
