We are doing a treatment that is to help the spsasm but not helping yet, tried the med's even two at a time but nothing works. Not sure what to do. But you tell him he has been in the bathroom 6 times in a row he sometimes will stop.

has the doctor tested him for a bladder infection? i know lots of people who can't hold 60 oz. of fluid, that is a lot. I would call the doctor's office and ask to speak with the doctors Nurse. Explain the situation to her and have her talk to the doctor for you to see if there is anything else to do. sorry ur going thru this. XXOO

Have you checked his PSA?
A full time foley catheter was a nuisance but really helped my dad. His prostate wass so enlarged he couldn't void.
Crickets right about UTI's too. Could it be a side effect of his regular meds?
Have you tired Detrol LA or like meds?

We have tried like four different med's, He has had a bladder infection. but that is gone, the going to the bathroom has been going on for sometime now, and no one can give me a really good answer, the bladder has been tested 3 times and it emptys they did some test that says he has the spasms. But they still can't tell me why it is that I can sometimes tell him to stop and he can. He has been in the bathroom today 50 times. I am about to do the full-time catheter if this new treatment doesn't work.

Well, I guess we know the answer to your question is at least 50 per day. Not much comfort.

I see on your profile that your father also has dementia. The father of one of the members of my local CG support group went through a period of being obsessed with going to the bathroom. Between dementia and spasms your poor dad is wearing a grove to the bathroom door, and driving you nuts! What happens when he gets into the bathroom. Does he dribble a little? Surely he isn't producing any volume that often.

What if you said something along the lines of "Dad, let's try using the bathroom once per hour. Here is a cute little timer we can set, and when it goes off I'll help you to the bathroom. You can wear some protective pads in your underwear, just in case you dribble a little between bathroom visits."

I feel for you. I remember pleading with my husband at 4 am, "You can't possibly need to pee. You peed 6 minutes ago. The human body cannot produce more urine that fast!" (Silly me, it is futile to try logic against dementia.) What finally worked for him was Saw Palmetto, for a slightly enlarged prostate. It took a few months, though. The enlarged prostate was pressing on him and making him feel an urge, and the dementia didn't allow him to reason through this and recognize it was a false alarm, because he had just gone.

Good luck!

hi again, my dad has prostate issues as well. i just bought him a couple urinals and said here ya go buddy. He loves that option.. He even has some days that he uses them instead of going to the bathroom. It works for me. At least it would be right there where he is and easy for him to use vs. you always having to help.

Thanks for all the insite and yes jeanne I have done the same thing at 4 am. Yesterday I finally got him to stop by telling him that I was going to take the tv away. After that it was 3 hours before he went again, and I do think that he does have obsessed with going to the bathroom. Because he doesn't produce anything when he has been in there 50 times. Hopefully the treatment today will help.
Thanks for listening

I am 74 year old male, and going to bathroom up to 36 times/day. Prior to green light surgery for enlarged prostate, I was going about 14 times/day.
Stopped two different prescriptions at about 100 days. Any suggestions?
