Mom is on hospice and until 2 wks ago had a big appetite. For the past week , she has refused food but will drink a few Boost each day. I offer all of her favorites but even soups are a no go now. I know this is part of the journey, how long do you think one can go on like this ?

wow , very surprised to hear how long some have gone without eating. mom has advanced RCC , mets to the lungs. She has always known the importance of eating for strength, now it just upsets her when I try. she was taking 4 shots per day, now because of not eating I am afraid to give her any. Sugar readings are high, I know it is not from food but maybe stress on her body, pretty confused on what to do.

Mom did that for a couple of months and then bounced back and started eating again. Its been off and on like that for nearly 3 years now.

I forgot to tell you that was a year ago. She eats well now.

This is worth talking to the hospice nurse about. Going with only fluids could go on a long time, but if she is on hospice other factors will come into play.

My husband ate a good breakfast the day he died. Ability/desire to eat is only one of several end-of-life indicators.
