So back story my grandma is 86 years old up til 5weeks ago no dementia cooking her own meals, no incontience basically did her thing but we have lived together for 11 years ago, she had her own apt upstairs. Then 5 weeks diagnosed with UTI .24hour hospital stay, antibotics, we moved her down stairs. Then 4 days later back to hospital dehydration that was 4 days stay, then home I suspected a UTI she had one was on cipro just finished last pill yesterday. She is weak, not eating much, confused. Had seen things a couple of times. She hates the caregiver says she is evil, she has been incontient. Since the second hospital stay, also she is grumpy, is this normal, how long until she gets back to somewhat ok? Thanks

Definitely call the MD. Cipro can shut down the kidneys and the resulting uremic poisoning will look like dementia. Make the call.

Google delirium and Cipro in the elderly. It can cause delirium in susceptible individuals. But I agree to make sure the UTI is cleared first. The elderly can also get delirium from being in the hospital - just the change in environment and schedule. So I'd say make sure grandma is clear of the UTI, then give her a chance to recover from the hospital stay and the possible effects of the Cipro. Good luck!

Agree with Babalou, Focus On the possible UTI first. Once that is taken care of discuss grandma's general health with her Dr. Now drs are very reluctant to give what may be interpreted as bad news so you may need to press hard because there will need to be arrangements made if and when she needs extra care. Make sure advance directives and living will are in place and you or another close relative have the necessary decuments signed for medical and financial control. At 85 the end has to come sometime so follow her wishes. keep her as healthy as possible, let her sleep when she wants to but don't let her just lie in bed. Encourage a change of surroundings like a short walk out side if she is able. Give easy to eat foods that she enjoys. the time may be passed to continue doing "things that are good for her" The caregiver may actually be evil so do pay attention to grandma's perceptions. Can she tell you why she thinks she is evil?

Sounds to me like the UTI is not yet cleared. Call her doctor right now to get her/his take on this. If for some reason you can't reach the doctor OR If her behavioral symptoms worsen, call 911.
