Find Care & Housing
The answer is "it depends". Medicaid (that's who pays for nursing homes and custodial care, not Medicare) varies by state and the community spouse (the one not living in the nursing home) is allowed to keep a certain amount of assets and income. Your best bet for your particular situation is a consultation with an elder law attorney that is also experienced in Medicaid in your state. They will also be able to tell you if any financial activity within the last 5 years in terms of gifting to anyone besides your parents to each other will affect Medicaid eligibility.
