This is a new problem. My mom used to be able to pee on the toilet and the urine could be collected in a cup or plastic hat inserted above the toilet. Now she is doing both #1 and 2 in her briefs before making it to the toilet and it's nearly impossible for her caregivers at her home to get a clean catch. Do any of you know another way to get a clean catch? I read you can use a pad to collect the urine and then a syringe to collect it. Has anyone tried that, and if so, where did you get the special pads and syringe? I'm getting desperate because she gets lots of UTIs and from what I've read, I don't think it's a good idea for her to get a catheter to do it. I believe she gets a lot of UTIs due to her pessary which gets cleaned by the gynecologist every 3 months, but now the gynecologist only wants to clean it every 6 months due to mom's decline in dementia. She squeezes her legs and insides so hard now, the gynecologist doesn't want to hurt her. I don't know what to do about that either. There will be a point where I won't be able to take her to the gynecologist, but her organs are so prolapsed that she requires the pessary. They hang down out of her without it. Does anyone have ideas on how to get the urine in a safe way? My mom's urine smells bad like she has an infection. Another problem is she just finished antibiotics for bacterial vaginosis a little over a month ago. She has to take antibiotics every 3-4 months for that or UTIs. Should we just wait for the UTI to go away on its own? Does that happen? Thank you for any help!

Thank you all for your help! My mom fell recently and had to go to the ER and stay at the hospital. They have a noninvasive way to get urine. It's called Purewick. Look it up! Instead of a traditional catheter, the Purewick device is placed in the nether region and it suctions any liquid. Mom didn't even notice it. The device has a tube that connects to a large pitcher and the urine travels from the device through the tube to the pitcher. The nurses were able to test mom's urine there and she did not have a UTI at the time. Gotta love technology with these kinds of inventions! Now I'm going to get one for her if UTI is suspected.

If mom gets a lot of UTI's you should be giving her dmannose daily. It's in a powder you mix in water. This can help prevent UTI's. I am surprised doc or gyno didn't mention this. To help prevent them. But then again I am not suprised.

This won’t help with the immediate problem, but there may be a maintenance dose of antibiotic that she can take every day to prevent UTI. Check with her doctor.

My Mom was taken to the ER by her AL. The ER did a catheterization to get all the urine and then IV antibiotics for a day or two. After that, she was given cranberry tablets and a probiotic daily to help prevent another one. Alva recommends D-Mannose for prevention.

UTIs get septic and cause death so I would not fool with this.

Call your MD.He/she can check with favorite urologist about what material you can use(boiled cotton comes to mind) to collect urine, wring and test. You don't want adult incontinent wear which is filled with any sort of contaminent. Other way is a huge cup of tea and she sits on toilet that has a "hat" to collect urine in it (plastic device, until she can go. Run the water in sink; that gives an urge to go. Cleaning before hand will give a cleaner catch.

UTI s do not go away on its own.

can you try taking her to the bathroom proactively? You won’t be able to get a clean catch.

If you can’t get a urine collected, I would make an appointment with her Dr and they would do the collection. I would also ask the dr for a prescription for something that helps keeping your mom from getting UTI s, my mom had a prescription that she took with vitamin c.. there was lots of scar tissue with pockets for bacteria to breed. Stopped her reoccurring problem. I don’t remember the name of it.. but your mom needs treatment.
