Find Care & Housing
If you are young enough for it to be affordable plan on Long Term Care insurance; choose carefully and read thoroughly. Some policies will not cover an ALF that has no on duty RN 24/7 and trust me, NONE do. Save save save save save, and how anyone saves for this without early on investment in real estate, I can't imagine. Know that you can not only assign a POA who is family or friend (and I would never assign a friend as the work is too hard) but you can choose a Licensed Fiduciary to manage your bills, placement, when you no longer can. Sure wish you the best. You don't mention your age, your job, your plans and savings, your investments and assets, and for each of us this is like a thumbprint--very individual.

Know that a Licensed Fiduciary is quite expensive, though. Around here they run a couple hundred dollars an hour.

Get a financial advisor in place now to help you plan for the money side of things, and get with a trust and estate attorney to set up the legal stuff like Powers of Attorney (financial and medical), Will, and Trust.

Take the time to write out what your desires are regarding long-term care and be sure someone has a copy of your legal papers or knows how to find them. DON'T keep them in a safe deposit box, because if the papers that give permission to someone to access your box are IN the box, well, you know that won't work out.

Don't treat your papers like there'll be some big-reading-of-the-will event after your death. It's vital that someone knows where they are, and that the person(s) you've chosen to hold powers of attorney, be executor, and serve as Trustee have accepted those responsibilities and understand them. You don't have to reveal who gets your million-dollar diamond collection to them, but they need to understand their duties to you.
