Did you have anything in writing or even text messages to show you were asked to help ?

Not much if you did this work without a paycheck at the time.
And if there was no contract.
If this is a substantial amount of money you can see an attorney to bring suit for the wages agreed upon, but this had better have been a witnessed agreement if verbal only.

You should have had something in writing. Did your SIL say you would be paid?

The only way you can get paid is if you had a signed contract with the man's family. A contract that would state what are your duties, how many hours you would work, and the hourly rate.

If there is no contract, unfortunately there isn't anything you can do. It doesn't hurt to ask the family by sending a letter with a timeline of everything you did, and hope that they would pay you something.
