My husband is currently in rehab. Social workers tell me I am in denial because I have not "chosen" for him to go into a facility. Prices I have been quoted are more than our entire income. I have no choice but to bring him home. Why do they pretend that I have a "choice"? "How long can you take care of him by yourself at home"? they ask, and tell me I am in denial. Well, I thought I was at the end of my rope, but I have just found there is no end.

Chlokara, I think it's likely that the Social Workers think you understand that he will qualify for Medicaid and YOU think that the Social Workers are being insensitive.

Have you asked the SWs "How can we afford this?" and laid out your financial picture to them?

Have you applied for Medicaid for him?

If he qualifies medically and financially for Long Term Care Medicaid, you, as the "Community Spouse" will not be impoverished. Please ask the Social workers to explain how this works.

There is such a thing as a Medicaid Planner. Medicaid rules differ by state and there are things you need to know before you apply that this person can help you understand in order to be prepared and make sure your husband qualifies.

It likely would benefit you if you saw an elder care attorney. Yes the attorney is going to cost you but he/she will be able to set up the transition to Medicaid for your husband in a way that will not leave you impoverished.
