I'm 30-years-old and I'm very obese and depressed. I always think if I were skinny, I’d be happy. I've been stuck in my room for 2 weeks. What should I do?

As someone who used to have an eating disorder I can assure you that being skinny is not going to make you any happier.

Losing weight is a journey. But it takes a strong person to stick it out from beginning to end. Before you do anything you should see your doctor. Tell her exactly what you told us. Trust me, I've never been obese but I did get so skinny I nearly died. It took a long time before I understood that any diet or exercise plan should begin with a strong outlook. It sounds to me like you need to figure out yourself first and why you feel the need to lock yourself away in your room just cause you are fat.

Skinny people are not happier people sarah, Healthy outlook to start and then healthy body will follow. But you need to start loving yourself, fat or not. When you think you are worthy most of the time things start to change. It isn't an easy road but it's one worth taking.

But first, please see your doctor. If you want our support feel free to come back all the time. You can do this!

Depression can cause weight changes. The concerning thing right now though is not your weight but the fact that you've been very depressed. It sounds like you should make an appointment with a psychiatrist to get some help for the depression so that you can start feeling better. In addition, a good counselor can help you with talking about the things/feelings that are hurting you and help you to work through them.

Then too, I would make an appointment with your regular doctor to have a full workup and have all of your blood levels checked, including your thyroid. Low thyroid function can also have an effect on weight, energy and can cause depression.

Please know you are not alone. Your body size doesn't determine your happiness. You just want to be healthy and feel good about yourself, and that starts with getting help for the root cause of the depression. You will feel better and have more energy too.

Hugs, you can do this! Please stay in touch with us and let us know how you're doing.

Hello Sarah.

You'll be relieved to know that nobody on the forum cares what shape body you've got.

What we do care about is what shape your head is in. And it strikes me that you didn't become obese in two weeks, and that therefore your hiding away must be about more than just your weight. So what's going on? What happened that has you sitting there believing that skinny = happy?

Get an appointment to see your doctor, today.

Being thin doesn't make you happy. But you certainly have more energy and feel more in control than when you're obese (that's my experience, anyway).

Are you on anti-depressants? They can work wonders for some folks.

Have you looked into weight management programs? There is an awesome app called Noom that I like alot.
