I have been on the waiting list for services. A woman from the agency called today and I am grateful that she has said I will most likely be approved to receive help with bathing mom, respite care of 8 hours a month for me to schedule my doctor appointments, a break from mom, etc. She also asked if I needed an attorney for handling any legal issues such as POA, wills, etc. and COA may for part of the fees. Anyone have any feedback for me? Thanks for help.

Find Care & Housing
Tacy,

Thanks. Mom has Medicare. She did mention meals on wheels. I cook so I told her that we did not need the meals. The 8 hours a month respite is a help. Will appreciate help with bathing too.

Been at this full time since 2005. I am tired!

Thanks, Shane.

Hope the respite care works out for me. It’s not a lot but more than I have now, so I am grateful.

Just hope my mom won’t complain about it.

My mom’s mom died when she was 85. I don’t remember her relying on my mom for much. She was extremely independent. My mom did not go through this with her mom so maybe that is why she doesn’t have a clear picture of how it is.

NHWM, so what if she complains, you need to stand up for your time away. She can gripe and complain all she wants, you don't have to listen.

Tell her at least she doesn't have to pay and to be grateful it's not 24/7.

Very true, isthisreallyreal.

Was just wondering how others viewed their services. Mom knows about it. We were interviewed years ago. So sad that the wait time is so long. Over here we were told that you stay on list until someone moves or dies. Guess there isn’t enough funding to supply everyone in need.

You're lucky - we have been on waiting list forever. My mother only did basic things for her mother also, did not have to dress her or bath her, etc. She had it easy!

I do everything for mom so it will be a relief to at least have some help. I’m grateful. Have been waiting a very long time for acceptance into program.

My mom uses Bristol Elders, which might be the same. They service her area. My mom likes the one person we have managed to keep for her, through a few hospital and nursing home visits. this person comes in for 2 hours on Tues, gives my mom a shower and changes the sheets and maybe starts a laundry. then she comes in on Thurs for light housekeeping - 2 1/2 hours and back again on Friday for just a shower.

Mom is getting very slow now - we have hired Visiting Angels to come in. this woman comes in on Monday, Wednesday and Friday 11-2 for cooking lunch and getting dinner in the frig for mom to warm up in her microwave on the table.
mom uses a walker so carrying anything is most difficult.

before Bristol Elders, the last woman we had stole from her so mom is highly suspicious, understandably so.
it seems to be working well,

So horrible that you had a person steal from your mom. To prey on the most vulnerable is truly a shame.
