My Mom had a small bar that went under the mattress to hold it in place. Its about 18 in wide. She used it to pull herself up and then had it to help her stand.

There is a contraption that goes behind the bed and has a trapeze type bar that hangs over the person. Its low enough for the person to reach up and pull themselves up.

Like JoAnn, we bought the bed rail that is held in place under the mattress. My dad uses it daily along with a step stool with a long, high handle. We’ve also lowered his bed as far down as it will go. We got both items on Amazon, there are a lot of choices there

Yes, Moms mattress came off of a childs bed. She liked it and it was only about 6 in. Then I purchased a 5 inch boxspring. Was as low as I could get her.

We used a short bed rail that had a board and strap that went under the mattress. I think we got it on amazon. We also removed Moms bed frame, and just had her box spring and deep mattress sit right on the floor. It put the top at a perfect height for her to swing her legs over and feet touch the floor. We did this after she fell out of bed and cut her leg badly on the sharp bracket on the metal frame, which necessitated wound care for weeks. Ugh. So a lower mattress may help.
