Recently my mom was hospitalized in a senior psych ward. She had a psychotic break. She was very paranoid, anxious, hallucinating, acting out by hitting, etc before they put her in the pysch area. She was in there for 3 weeks until they could find the right combo of meds to bring her back to “reality”. So far, so good, but I’m really nervous that she will take a step back as the dementia progresses. It’s scary to watch someone go through this. Has anyone had to deal with this before?

After we found the sweet spot for meds for mthr, we don't even consider changing them. I had a new NP visit her who questioned the need for all those drugs, and I had to explain that YES she needs every one of them, and it took weeks to figure out!

Mom definitely needs the meds. Her regular doc has tried to cut back on them, but I said NO. If he takes her off them or reduces strength then we have a huge problem.

OP, so sorry you are going through this. Hope they soon find a med combo which works for her. I know this has to be so frightening. Hugs to you.

Not in a senior, but yes I have been around someone when they had a psychotic break. He is schizophrenic and has been off his meds. It was scary to witness, but even more scary for him to be in the midst of it, as it was his reality at that time.

The take away is that there is treatment for this and you can take some solace in knowing help is available if it happens again.

Mom hated it there. I know she was terrified and really confused. She was so hyped up. So delusional. It was so sad and scary. Yes, there is the psych ward that is right next door to the nursing home.
