Why is it so hard to get anyone to put a wheelchair ramp outside the home ? I have called every agency I can think of and get nowhere.

Call the Area Agency on Aging in your community/county and tell them your situation including financial...you may qualify for something through them. Also, call Home Depot or Lowes...I know they sell ramps and they may also install them for an extra fee. The senior center, AARP, or any disabled organization in your county. Ask his dr., I hope this helps!!

How about a Boy Scout troop? I read sometimes about projects that they take on. Willl you need a building permit?

call habitat for humanity. if ya lived in indiana id hook ya right up. a ramp can be as simple as two 2x12 planks buried on their sides with a few stake supports and filled right over the steps with # 52 dirty gravel. dirty means its full of ag lime and packs and drains well.. bout a 30 dollar project.

jM, start asking at your local churches. There are ALWAYS programs for either old people, disabled people or little kids. It used to be, that the first place a person went in time of need was to the local church. Our church is really small, but even WE have things in place if someone needed help. Pick up the phone an start calling.

You would be better off paying for the ramp than for the transport people. We actually built one ourselves and it is not that hard. You can get very helpful advice and information at Home Depot or Lowe's and also from free how-to books from your library. We decided to make one of concrete for durability and have gotten a LOT of use over the years both with those we care for and for visitors who are in wheelchairs or have trouble with stairs. You can also call the local Council on Aging or United Way. Our Atheist group regularly provides services like this to the elderly and handicapped for free.

Call a contractor and ask them to build one. Ask around your neighborhood who has carpentry skills and could build one. Call your local elder medical supply and ask them. Look in the Penny Saver under "Services" and start calling the contractors. Depending in what you can afford, you will eventually find a good soul who will help you, maybe for cost of materials, maybe less.

Is your husband getting disability payments? If so, I understand he is eligible for Medicaid, and Medicaid will provide a ramp.

Call your United Way organization and ask to be put in touch with the services you need.

What city do you live in? I have a contractor I know who's specialty is installing different things needed by disabled people or seniors. He is starting a company to make ramps and for rent.

My husband gets a disability check from VA and the Area on aging was here today and we would have to pay 96% for anything they do from Helping me get him in the shower so he won't fall again to anything else. The copay is generally $19.00 an hour. I know they need funds but this is supposed to be a distressed city and I can't afford to pay that.

Have you tried at a church? Sometimes that is a great resource .
