Mom has been living with me 7 yrs now and still knows me but not much else--now she can't get to the bathroom or and has no strength to lift herself out of bed. She has fallen 2 times already--is it time to take her to the hospital?
Even if you were a medical professional taking care of your mom 24/7 would be too much for just one person. If she's become bed-bound and is falling when she does get up it's time to look into a skilled nursing facility.
Your mom needs round-the-clock monitoring and possibly constant medical monitoring and care that you cannot possibly provide unless you are a medical professional. It's time.
I took care of my mom at home. We she was unable to get herself out of bed, we helped her, when she couldn't get to the bathroom, we used a potty, when she couldn't walk, we used a wheelchair. I just wanted to point out that there are ways to help if you can do it. Good luck to you and your mom.
Medicare will provide a hospital bed at no charge, pay $35.00 a month and they will send an electric bed. To me that is a necessity. Put up guardrails to prevent falling out.They will also provide a bedside commode and a very cumbersome and heavy wheelchair. Medicare expects the patient to wheel themselves; no regard for caregiver. Mother could not manage a wheelchair; plus it was so big and heavy, we couldn't get in the car. We used a transporter chair; lightweight and comfortable for Mom.
