Gma in hospital w/ severe UTI test clean 3days prior. In the past month my grandmother has refused to eat or drink several times then begins to slowly eat and drink again, legs give out on her, coherence has declined severely, hallucinations, tries to get up and falls, she only knows her first name and no longer recognize my face. Im her only grandchild and was raised by her and taken care of her until 2007 when she entered assistant living. I am 33 yrs old and she is 95 yrs old. The dr will try rehab , change of meds and psych evaluation but I wanted to know if this is the last stage of Alzheimer's. Im an optimist and in denial but just wanted to hear some input from others who may have or is going through a similar situation. Thank u for listening. :'(

At 95 it could be any one of multiple systems just plain wearing out. If she is not drinking enough fluids, that alone can make her confused. So the MD has to look at bloodwork and urine analysis and weight loss and at some point he may recommend Hospice come in to the picture. Try not to reject that option, they really are wonderful helpful angels.

pamstegman is correct about fluids, they need enough to drink, esp water. I just wanted to give you my support.

My mom had dementia that led into Alzheimers. She too in the later stages started to undress herself. After a long time of dealing with it , after being admitted to a nursing home they asked for money and purchased jump suits that snapped down the back. That problem was solved. You might try a medical supply store. As for the other issues I agree her doctor is thebest one to make the determination as to why these things are happening. Good luck!

How long has her uti been cleared up? It took my mother weeks to improve mentally and physically after hers, and she had to be in rehab and received three different types of therapy for help. She didn't have Alzheimer's, though.

Sometimes substituting or supplementing just plain water helps to maintain fluid levels. If she can tolerate juices that may help - the flavors may stimulate her appetite as well.

Hoping for some better news the next time you write!

UTIs are nasty and they are the thing that makes the elderly seem as though they have "lost it". My mother has had a bout over the past month in which she didn't even know her own name. This morning she is having PT and getting her hair done. She is completely lucid, although she still often gets me mixed up with my daughter, her granddaughter who seldom comes to visit. Don't give up hope.

Our elderly are very hearty now, I would say no, it was the UTI. My Mom undressed her self 5 years ago and hasnt walked, talked or known me for years in my own home. I think sometimes she will outlive me, lol . God I love her, I just miss my own freedom sometimes but wouldnt trade it. I would say she will be just fine. Once they stop eating and smily, thats the last stage. My Mom keeps opening her mouth for food and I feed her, gotta love her! She is going on 93.

Keep her OFF medication!!! Start a UT health program - Dandelion root 3 X per day then even double dose - cranberry capsules - plenty of water, make sure she drinks at least 8, 8 oz glasses daily. How are her bowels? This is urgent that she moves copiously daily.
