I work as a caregiver to this couple who runs a home health care for elderly. I work in one of their homes. I take care of 4 patients, 3 are bedridden, and 1 is not. 5 days a week for 24 hr, 2 days off, and i get paid weekly 500 dollars a week/2000 a month. My question is, am i getting paid right.

I pay my caregiver $400 a week for one ambulatory patient Monday thru Friday 8-4... and I am underpaying.

You are getting $500 for 24 hours of work, that comes to $20.83 per hour. Depending on where you live, your previous work experience, your level of skill/training that could either be seen as a very good hourly wage or terribly below par. The thing is, you agreed to take this job for this pay. Has something changed dramatically since then, or have you just woken up to the fact the clients are probably paying 3 times that and the owners are making out like bandits? You are certainly within your rights to renegotiate or seek different employment. Frankly I am more concerned that 4 vulnerable people are left in the care of only one person, are their families aware that this is the level of care they are paying for?

5 x 24 hour shifts on the trot is ridiculous if you are the only person providing care. Are you the only person providing care during those hours?

Sorry nadette, I misunderstood. You are earning $500 for 5 24 hour shifts, not 5 shifts totalling 24 hours. That works out to only $4.16/hour, most teenage babysitters earn more than that today. There is no doubt something is deeply wrong with this arrangement, aside from your ridiculously low wages one person can not possibly adequately care for such high needs individuals, especially for 5 days and nights without a break. These families are being taken advantage of, and so are you.

Nadette, this arrangement is not right - not for you, not for the people who are paying for their accommodation and care. I'm sure you are doing an excellent job but that's not the issue. No-one can work without adequate rest for 120 hours straight. Nobody. So what happens if one of the four should need urgent attention when you're asleep?

Next question: what can you do about it? Others forum members will know where you can find help and advice - what state are you in?

Cwillie it is 24 hours for five days each week. That is roughly 4.00 an hour and no overtime. Yes, very underpaid! I would be in touch with the labor department in your state. I think they would be quite interested in pursuing this couple that abuse employees so. Get a regular caregiving job in a facility at 10.00 an hour with paid overtime.

It's my understanding that the payroll laws are different for caregivers who are live-ins... the hourly rate isn't calculated for when the caregiver is sleeping or having her own meals, thus the 24 hours go down to more like 16 hours. Live-in caregivers aren't entitled to overtime.

The Owners probably know that and is taking the cheapest way of running their home care business. The Owners really need to have someone else work the overnight shift, so that nadette5254 can be bright and alert for her own shift the next day by going home to sleep.

I am confused if it is 24 hours a week over 5 days, or 5 shifts of of 24 hours each..please clairfy. We all seem to be interpreting this post differently. I know we can not work 24, hours in a row in my facility. It makes a huge difference in your pay rate. However, I work in a hospital...
