I have been taking care of my husband for 7 yrs now & pretty good at it. Took being organized with a schedule, same schedule every day. I read they were helping spouses, adult children with money, my husband is a vet, and 75yrs old with health issues like a past heart attack which slowly took certain memories after the heart attack, short term memoryis affected. Our rent went up $350.00 per month more, our original landlords passed, one last December(2020) and her husband in 2015, new owners raised it to $350.00 more a month!! I've checked the VA and nothing on Senior Vets whose spouses take care of them, checked in my state dept of labor&training nothing. I would welcome feedback on what to do.

if your husband is a vet, you may be able to get VA Aid and Attendance. Call the VA office in your area and ask to be assigned to a caseworker to establish if you qualify. If you qualify, they will help you fill out the forms. It takes several months to get approved. Apply for community Medicaid to help with your husband's meds.

I'm confused by your comments on the VA.  It DOES help with meds, unless policy has changed in the last few years.   I think you're missing out on some benefits.

Have you signed up for VA newsletters that provide info on a variety of topics?
https://www.va.gov/VetResources/

Have you checked out the VA's caregiver advice and posts?

If your husband is already getting VA assistance, contact the VA, advise to which team (i.e., green, red) he's assigned and ask to speak with the social worker.   He/she can help direct you to VA assistance.

As to the rent, check your least to see if the raise in rent is addressed in the lease.  If not, ask the VA social worker if there's any assistance for that.

Have you contacted your local Senior Center for suggestions?  My father's SC has a social worker on staff; she was very, very helpful.

Have you contacted your local county to see if it has a Senior unit?

Is your husband taking medications not covered by VA? Have you checked with all your doctors about what medications have generic coverage, are still truly needed, or might be replaced with older (and likely just as good) medication? Start there.
Of course the cost of housing is hurting all seniors very badly and the inflation that is general is very bad.
I would start with a VA social worker to be certain you are making use of all the sources you can. See your Council on Aging as well. I would also check with all charitable organizations, esp. those involved with vets.
Other than that I would be after 7 years, and as you say checking all you can, that you are smarter about all this than many of us. I hope others here have better advice for you. I am so sorry you are going through this and wish I had better hints or a clue how to help. Wishing you luck; hoping you will update us and others about any help you find.

Aid & Attendance VA programs -- that pay for others to help with long-term ADL care -- are available to vets who served at least one day during a wartime. Aside: My father's service dates were just outside the Korean War and, even with a service-related disability rating, he did not qualify.

Medical care and medications are covered by the VA for all honorably-discharged vets and includes home nurse visits that are ordered by VA docs.

Do you qualify for HUD senior housing?

If you are truly low income with limited assets, contact Social Security to see if he qualifies for Extra Help which is a Social Securityprogram to help with prescription costs.

If you had a lease in effect, the rent cannot be raised until new lease. Also, State law only allows a certain percentage that it can be raised. In my state its 4%. So 4% on, lets say, a $1000 is $40. You need to call your County Housing authority and see if this is legal.

You need to visit the VA dept in your County. Take all you husbands military papers to see what he is entitled to. If he was in during wartime, he maybe able to get Aid and Attendance.

If you fit the Medicaid criteria, you maybe able to be paid to care for your husband. Not all States offer this though. But u maybe able to get an aide to give u a break.

Call your Office of Aging and see what resources they offer.
