Some towns have taxpayer-paid handymen to assist seniors. My mom's town has that. The seniors pay only for parts. .Call their town and see if they might have such a program . . . or if they know where else you might look for free help.

Call the City they live in. In the city my grandma lives in they have a senior services program. They help do things like put in grab bars, ramps, fix leaky faucets, etc. My grandma was able to get a new hot water heater because they city tried to fix it a few times, but finally ended up replacing it.

Also, consider any untapped resources that may qualify them for help, such as was one or both a Veteran?

Consider calling Volunteer Chore Services. There's usually programs for seniors that can help with some of the smaller repairs and definitely help guide you to reputable vendors if you needed a more expensive repair. Good luck!
