I feel I need to stay with my daddy on a full time base but I can not afford to do so with getting a pay check. I Live in TN and need to find out what is available in my area. As far as getting a pay check?
happydaughter, here is one thing to think about if one is trying to decide whether to quit work to care for an aging parent.... on average if a working person quits work he/she will lose over the years between $285,000 and $325,000 which includes loss of salary, plus net worth loss of the health insurance, loss of money being put into social security/Medicare, loss of other benefits such as matching 401(k), etc. [source: Reuters 5/30/12].
Please note that the majority of grown children do not get paid for caring for their aging parent unless the parent can afford to pay you. If your Dad can afford to pay you, he might as well hire a certified Caregiver so that you can continue working to add to your own retirement fund.
Does your dad have any funds? If not, would he qualify for medicaid?
If he pays you from his own funds, will you be able to afford your own health insurance and be able to continue to build up funds for your own retirement? I don't know your age or his age, but you face the risk of not contributing anymore to social security which along with medicare you will need later on.
I would also suggest searching this site for stories of those who have quit their jobs, careers, spent their retirement funds, and lost their own homes. I hope you don't end up taking this leap, but it you do take a very long look at how far down and narrow the leap is for so many.
Try to find some way to make sure your dad is taken care of and safe without having to throw yourself under the bus.
He would have to pay you from his own funds. The bigger issue, though is boredom. Both of you are stuck staring at the four walls. On the other hand, in Assisted Living he would have lots of company. You would have a life of your own and could visit whenever you want. Medicaid will take care of his needs, they will pay for MD ordered aides and nurses, but they will not pay you.
