My mother has dementia, she is in assisted living, she recently had a UTI. She was seen by a urologist and tested to see how her bladder was functioning. It was determined that it has lost it's elasticity and she would need a catheter. She has pulled it out 4 times. We have been searching for help and don't know where to turn.

It's going to be difficult to stop her from pulling it out. There is a strap with velcro in which you can wrap it around her upper thigh and the catheter tubing goes through it. I'd buy one of those fancy looking Depends or adult pampers and tell her it's a special underwear or something. If she refuses to wear it, try the Poise or leakproof undies. Then put on slacks with a belt or suspenders. I'm not sure. There was a topic on this here recently. You may want to do a search using the top right for previous answers to your question.

A foley catheter that has an inflatable bulb at the end can be pulled out even if the bulb is still inflated. I am a nurse and have seen this happen numerous times (mostly by intoxicated patients at the E.R). The inflated bulb can cause damage to the urethra. Bookluvr has some great suggestions to try and prevent this from happening.

Talk to the doctor to understand the consequences of her not keeping it in vs. the hassle to keep it in. Of course it will help her heal faster to keep it in. But if that's not going to be possible without extra measures that might be undesirable, you'll want to know what the tradeoffs are.

Sitting around in wet depends is not good for a person either. It can cause skin breakdown at the least. Tena makes some higher capacity disposable briefs. But, they have to be checked & changed pretty much like you would a kid in diapers to prevent rash, etc. Your mom's AL facility can probably get them at a bulk discount rate you couldn't get from the drug store. My mom's place would drop off a giant box of them once a month for $40. I had also gotten her some cases of adhesive disposable bed pads so the bed wouldn't get wet at night. GoodNights for little kids will stick to the sheets and not come up if there is any polyester content at all. Learned that the hard way!
