My friend had a stroke and is homeless. He now has Medicaid. The rehabs i called wont take him cause of homelessness--i offered to take him in once he got more rehab..hes only 58 does not have ssdi yet
See if the NH he is in has a social worker that can help and make them aware he has no family.If the NH doesn't have an inhouse SW ask them to help you get in contact with one. He is lucky to have you.
58 is not young, and the body heals slowly, or in the case of a large stroke, not at all. His future is not promising, and you should resist the urge to take him in. Do not make false promises to him, just visit and cheer him up.
If he now has Medicaid, can't he stay in the nursing home? And can't he get therapy right there? I suppose if he recovers fully he can't stay in the NH indefinitely, but I would think he could get therapy there. I agree with texarkana -- talk to the social worker!
I have been visiting in a large hospital recently and sometimes read internal bulletin boards as I pass them. I saw a large poster with "How to discharge a homeless patient." I didn't take time to read the whole thing, but I found it interesting that it existed at all. And the first few bullets were about finding a safe place to discharge the patient to. Apparently your friend's hospital did that by sending him to a nursing home. The NH can't discharge him to the street, either. Talk to them about the options open to them.
Like Pam, I would hesitate to encourage you to take him in -- at least until his recovery unfolds and his future is clearer. If he doesn't fully recover, the nursing home may be the best place for him.
