My friend needs Medicaid but her name is on two houses. Advice?

Usually houses aren't counted in if one can qualify for Medicaid.... but what Medicaid does do is place liens on the properties. That way when the time comes to sell both houses, Medicaid will take what money is owed them for the care of your friend.

Another choice is to sell one of the houses and your friend can hire professional caregivers to come in to help her.

Another choice is to contact an Elder Law attorney and ask him/her what would be her best option for the future.

She should sell her parents' house and use that money to gain admission to a nice facility as a private pay patient. Then she can rent out her home and use that to help pay for her care. By doing this, she can avoid the Medicaid hassle for a long time. Have her sit down with an elder care attorney on how to legally do this.

More info to help. She cannot sell one house because Medicaid had a lien on it due to parents being in a home. She lives in the other with family who is finding it difficult to take care of her.

She sells house #1 and pays off the lien, she sells house #2 at fair market value to the family that is caring for her and then she takes the money that is left, if any, and private pays for a nursing home until she qualifies for Medicaid.
