I have POA which give me & my aunt to make medical decisions including discharging her Dr. If we find fit! Her Dr. Is giving her over 280 Narcotics a month. Mom is a reformed alcoholic and is an addicted prescription addict! She is getting 150-10-325 Hydrocodone 5x's daily, 120-2mg Hudromophone 1-2 tabs daily, 90-5mg Diazapam 2x's day, 90-100mg Seriquel 3 @ bedtime, muscle relaxer, sleeping pills, Lexapro. She is 78 yrs. old. When I asked her Dr. In 2004 why he keeps giving her so many Vicodin per month when she has occasional pain? His response was she's addicted and to take her off would kill her!!! Since things have become worse. She has 1 kidney failed, weaknes, unsteady on her feet, nauseous, vomiting, diarrhea, hallucinations over medicating herself! She is obsessed with her meds. She cannot leave them alone. We had a nurse brought in by the Dr. To set her pills in a pill box. She moved them all around and didn't take them correctly. After many instances of her hallucinations and not remembering these instances. I have filed a complaint with the Board of Licensure. I am waiting for a response. After my moms recent hospital stay the nurse and I cut her back on hydrocodone. From 5-2. She was not happy but started coming back to reality. We invested in a pill dispenser lock machine. It works great! My mother is upset because she can't get into the box until 11 & 5 when it gives her meds to her. She was mad and called the local PD stating I stole her meds and refuse to give them to her! I also called DHS in my state to report the Dr. Get this the social worker said she was fine when she saw her on Friday and her Dr. Now insists that she can live by herself and demanded she she gets 5 pills everyday! My mom said she only wanted 3 but told her the Dr. Wants you to have 5! It's just a matter of time before this kills her! She stated on several occasions she hates her life and she wants to take a bottle of pills and kill herself! Yet, he continues to give her addiction more drugs! I am furious that he can give her These large amounts and doesn't see her at home! Her hallucinations are severe! I don't talk to the Dr as I gave him Court documents to sign for Guardianship to put my mom in Assisted Living. He showed it to my mother she said no way and the Dr. Shredded the court paper! I told the court and they are trying to help with the information on agencies I wrote above! In the meantime it is a waiting game! I am going to send him the POA and a request to give me her medical records to another Dr. My mother refuses to leave him as a Dr. Due to the narcotics she gets! I feel this is negligence on his part and he has taken away so much of her life and making her weak from the meds he gives her. He is not affiliated with either hospital, no one has access to her records when she is admitted due to his non affiliation. He has no other Dr. In his practice, no answering service and now he doesn't take MaineCare so my mother pays him $70-85 for an office visit! This is insane and this is a lot of red flags! I am waiting on medical records from the home nurses to pursue this in Probate! The pharmacy has also stated that my moms Dr. Calls and screams at them to fill her pain meds even though they are not due to be filled! I need to get him away from my mother he is killing her! I would love to close his practice down due to his non caring and non professional quality of care! There is so much more to say about this monster and have medical records, pharmacy and Police records where my mom calls says people are knocking at the door and crawling in her window! I am in dire need of help! I am going to send the letter firing him and POA. My mother says she made out a new POA with her Dr. Which is against the law if he is her POA! If anyone can help I am desperate for answers to save my mothers life! I cannot stand the Dr. And he feels the same about me! His Nurse and he both told me she is incapable of taking her meds or not to be monitored at home! Yet now he is claiming she is fine and able to care for herself! She doesn't cook or bathe without someone there with her. I am on disability and cannot afford to drive over there everyday. So I am always worried if she will have another hallucination and walk out the door and go missing or kill herself. 4 weeks ago I went over at 9 pm she was putting papers in her purse said she was going to put them in a safe place I said where is that? She said locked in her car! She hadn't had a car for over 7 years. It's all crazy! Please help! At wits end!

Take all of mom's prescriptions to a new doctor. If you stop them abruptly, mom may die. The doc will wean her off them gradually and try to sort everything out. You don't have to "fire" the doctor. Just never ever ever go see him again. Report him to the state medical board. The guy belongs in jail.

I think I would report this Doctor to the State Medical Board and the local Police Department.

Is SHE the local Adult Protective Services? If you've reported your mother's condition there, and they say she's fine (they are wrong, of course), you've covered yourself.

Hoping others have better ideas. But I'd go with trying to get local police and perhaps the State level drug task force on this guy.

Banality! Yes I have filed a complaint with State of Maine Board of Licensure. I am waiting for his response to this. I have written a letter to our State Senator and hoping to hear tomorrow.
I am going to contact the police narcotics squad. He is trying to have me arrested by controlling my moms medicine. She is back to 5 hydrocodone and has been stoned the last 2 days. I am going to bring the POA to his office discharging him as soon as possible!
I am trying to get an arrest report from the 80's when my mother stole a RX pad and was caught writing her own scripts! She made the front page of the paper! She also assaulted a female cop in 1982 being pulled over for DUI!
I have a personal vendetta to stop this Dr. For the seriousness of his actions. I filed a complaint with Protective Services for the Elderly. They went to see her before I was forced to give her back her narcotics and they said she was fine! Well I asked them to go after the Dr. And they are siding with this drug pusher! Totally anxiety going on here and I just can't give up till I get her in a home. She cannot take care of herself.
I will update and some calls tomorrow! Thank you!

Once you find a new doctor, sign a medical release pursuant to your POA authority (which should authorize you to sign certain legal documents). My sister who was a nurse said that doctors will respond quicker to send patient records if they receive a request from another doctor as opposed to a patient.

This is a long shot, but I'm wondering if this doctor is overmedicating other patients. If they're paying for meds under Medicare Part D, and he is pushing pills, there may be a basis for Medicare fraud.

But definitely file a complaint with your state's licensing board. If the doctor is a member of other medical professional groups, such as an internists' professional association, a primary care doctor's professional group, you might want to notify them as well so they can institute a review and terminate any enrollment he might have.
