Mom's ( 96 y/o) skin bleeds easily when she scratches and it leaves open, bleeding sores. What works best here?
I've tried sooo many.

I prefer Aveeno. It is oatmeal based & is very soothing to tender skin.

PS: Best to apply directly after bathing while skin is still moist.

Do you have E45 in the US? I have to say, sadly, that as an itchy eczema-y type myself I've never really rated any of the so-called soothing remedies (not one does as good a job as a cold flannel, for example); but the E45 lotion has certainly done a good job of preventing any breaks in mother's "tissue paper" areas, and on her pressure sore prone heels. It smells quite nice and it isn't horrible to use. I was also told to use the E45 cream instead of soap or shower gel, but found that it did nothing to get her clean and turned every surface in the bathroom into an ice rink so nuts to that.

One other thing I've looked into is causes - does your mother have any degree of kidney disease? Not to be alarmist; but as time goes on they develop uraemia, which does eventually get very itchy and won't respond to any surface treatment. I'm stocking up on silk underwear in advance: no miracles to report, but at least mother isn't constantly fiddling with it and complaining about its seams "rubbing."

I prefer Eucerin, because it's unscented and won't aggravate any itching. Be sure to use unscented -- if it says it has fragrance, that can aggravate itching.

I haven't heard of E45 whereas I have heard of Aveeno and Eucerin, which I think I can get at the grocery store. I will check them out. Yes, my mom has severe kidney problems. I didn't know that contributed to skin problems. Thanks for the info. Will report back if any further questions........cadams

cadams severe kidney disease does give a patient severe skin itching. has the Dr prescribed any medication for this? if not bring it to his/her attention. Side effects may make her sleepy but so does kidney disease. Any agitation also needs to be treated. For skin care i find the Goldbond brand personally helpful. There is a lotion specially for diabetic skin which seems excellent. I am not diabetic but do get itchy from nerve damage.

For my husband (and me!) I use Walgreen's fragrance free MOISTURE LOTION. The ingredients compare to Cetaphil which was recommended by our doctor.
