Stepmom has Alzheimer's/aphasia just admitted to memory care and could use help from an assistance dog as my father as a companion is there such a service to provide a dog for both of them to share a dog? They live in southern california
The shelters are filled with older dogs that need a good home. These are dogs that their elderly owners had passed on, and through no fault of their own found their way to an animal shelter. They are sitting there wondering what did they do wrong. A new caring home would be great for them :)
So many times I have read where a dog is rescued and adopted, and in return that dog becomes a hero to his/her new owner.
The dog would be more for him, He is almost 83 acts much younger, he has been caring for his wife for so long finally it was time for more care for his wife. He is a dog lover and it would be great for him to have a companion and maybe to bring the dog to visit his wife too. We have enough family members that could take the dog if needed. Looking for a therapy or assistance dog for him. He tried a puppy it was too much so my sister adopted the puppy he loved that dog so much as did his wife but def the wrong decision just wondering if there are dogs that need a good home.
Tobeery, I am not sure if the Assistant dog is for your Mom, or for your Dad, or both? These dogs are usually trained to specialize in a certain medical condition.
I assume your Dad lives by himself, thus the dog would be good company for him. I am just concerned about your Dad's age and the age of the dog.
Dogs, depending on size, can live from 10 to 15 years. Would your Dad be able to take care of a dog when Dad is over 90 years old? Unless family can take over the care of the dog later on.
