I'd start with the phone book or online. Just do a general search for asst. living in your area or whatever. Then start visiting them. Take advantage of the free lunch they offer to prospective residents. And talk to the people that are walking the halls and/or the families visiting. Take every brochure they give you and write down on those brochures the things that you noticed etc. Because believe me, after you've visited a half dozen of them you won't remember what you liked and what you didn't like about each one.

Definitely call A Place For Mom. I used them recently used them to place my 95 year old aunt who had fallen in October and had a hip replacement. Their 800# is 866-344-8005. It was pretty much a full time job researching facilities, checking around online, calling EACH suggested facility, visiting many of the facilities then finally making a decision. It's a tough road!

Call your Area Agency on Aging. They should have lists of the facilities in the area. Your choice will depend on the needs of the person you are placing. A person with physical needs is different than a person with dementia. If dementia is part of the picture, your local ALZ organization will have lists of places that are recommended for people with dementia.
