Any advice as to plans for stroke victim (35) who will not recover with 50k in retirement funds currently living with parents?

What a sad situation. There are a lot of variables here that need to be answered before anyone here will be able to make suggestions. What do you mean by "will not recover"? Is he permanently disabled? To what extent? Is he able to express his preferences for living arrangements? Is he living with his parents? Are they able to provide the care he needs? How old are the children? Is he able to interact with them? My first reaction is that he might be better off to stay near his parents if they are his caregivers. 50K will not last long if he needs to hire caregivers at the location closer to his children.

If he 35 I am guessing his children are young. Will his SSD payment pay for a living place?

At 35 I dought he is getting much in SSD. He really doesn't have the work time. He gets Medicare and probably medicaid.

Oh gosh. How sad and difficult. If the parents are guardians, it sounds as though he should remain closer to them for a while. I mean - as guardians they will be needed to sign documents, etc.? Pls provide a bit more info.

He will have to spend the 50K to get SSD. Unless, you can set up a "Special Needs Fund". This takes a lawyer and a judge. There will be a trustee because he won't be able to touch the money.

Once trust is set up, then he can apply for SSI or SSD.

Parents who are guardian will have to take over, spend down to Medicaid eligibility level, and or turn guardianship over to their State (who will do the same, use the 50k as needed until it's gone). At age 35 he surely must have the 40 credits to qualify for SS. That only takes 10 years (4 credits per.year), heck I had that by age 25. So sorry to hear of this sad situation--this is one where the taxpayers definitley should all chip in and help, that is what is needed.
