My fiancee was injured in Iraq and has a disability rating of 80% through the VA. He has always attempted to self manage his PTSD without assistance. Over the past few months things have progressed at a dangerous rate. He was in a terrible car accident, and shortly after hospitalized for brief psychosis. My permanent residence is in Chicago Il, but due to the series of unfortunate events I relocated to care for him to Henderson Nevada. We applied for the caregiver program but were told there is a 4 month wait due to high volume of applicants in this area. I have been here for over a month, and we have made some progress, we are currently awaiting his acceptance into The Road Home program through Rush hospital in Chicago. Since I am unable to work at this time due to the nature of his care needed, I was wondering if there are any grants or financial assistance available during this transition period. Thank you for your time

Hopefully pamstegmas suggestion works. Other than that, most of the financial institutions right now are running far behind. Example: my SSI was discontinued (after 17 years) due to, their saying they do not have one sheet of paper regarding the workers compensation settlement. Without calling or writing to me they closed my account. When I found out, they said if will take 3-6 months to reinstate.

Good Luch

Have you ever known a veteran who has gotten fast service (from the government)? As a fiancé, you are not entitled to anything. You must be married and since I know the military air base in Las Vegas, you would be able to buy things at the commissary and PX. Again, you need to be married. As far as his PTSD, he has access to the mental health professionals without a referral, and it would be a great resource for him. Good luck to you both!

Contact the Congressman or woman responsible for the district in which you live. Tell them you need help and why you are calling them ( there is a veteran in dire need). If necessary go to their office or satellite office to speak with them or send them a follow up email. Their assistant will call you and will help direct you until the situation is resolved. Be the advocate and make sure these elected officials words are taken to heart when they are elected. It's their job to help us and they will make sure you find the right direction to go.

When I was needing help for my mother I found out that she qualified for Aid and Attendance. I received help in getting VA approved using the VetAssist Program thru Veterans Home Care. I don't know if the are a national program. How the program works is they assist you in getting the paperwork filled out and they handle directly with the VA so thing move faster then if you do it yourself. They will cover your caregiving expenses until you are approved and then they pay their selves back. I hope you can get some answers or assistance soon.

He needs to contact a VSO as he might be able to qualify for an increase in his disability rating due to the changes in his health. It's better to approach it from within the system before you go to any Congressman...that could actually slow things down. As far as A & A, not everyone qualifies...they turned down the claim for us, but maybe it'll work for you. It's frustrating for us, because we can't get the Caregiver Program either, since Congress set it up only for post/911 vets. I've been sole caretaker for DH for over 15 years and it is taking its toll on my health (I'm 69) and causing depression and anxiety. We both need help, but it's just not available. Wishing you better luck!
