We did not owe taxes with just the SS incomes. In 2016 there was a change as hubs worked PT Temporary Seasonal, and taxes were deducted. Our income still cannot support the expenses of a tax attorney, a C.P.A, or even hrblock helps. So, would it be unwise to let the IRS figure it out and send us a refund, if one is due? This part of re-instating tax responsibilities will be new to me-not sure I am up for it. All our income is above-board and the gov't knows about it.

BTW, if we end up owing taxes, hubs work will not have been cost-effective.

I can't help with American taxes, but I do know that for basic tax prep, especially for seniors, there is free software - I've used the canadian version of turbo tax for years and it is set up to walk you through step by step, OR volunteer services - aarp is one - to help with filling out your returns.

Send, what tacy wrote was a good idea. Turbo Tax is one of the free tax preparation programs. They won't charge anything for federal tax if you make less than a certain amount. You should qualify. After you give your email and write a password, they will ask you questions for the return. Very simple. They'll also give the option of submitting a tax return for a certain amount. The tricky thing will be that if you didn't do a return last year, they will have to work around verifying you with the IRS. I don't know how they would do that if you didn't file a return.

They will also do the EIC for you. If your income is below a certain amount, you should qualify. If your income was low chances are you'll get back all the taxes that hubs paid in.

Thanks CWillie, Tacy, and Jessebelle.
I did file a tax return every year by signing it and sending it in. Even though we did not owe any taxes, it was for keeping them informed of my address each year.

Guess I will go for help. Thank you!

My kindle does not support going online for helps. Just spent two hours (1 1/2 on hold) to Social Security. There is a huge funtional gap between knowing what to do and doing it. I will try harder, maybe try the library computers (in public).

Send, AARP has volunteers that do tax help often at the public library. The area agency on aging or aarp website might list dates, or call your branch of library. Several credits exist that might help you:))

Another year! Thank you all very much! Last year I did send in the tax form with no totals, but filled out income blanks. We received an EIC form from the IRS, they sent us money!

I think that I can do most of the form again this year, minus the EIC stuff.

But last year, I checked the box to apply any refund to this year's return.
I have no idea if there was a small return, and if there was, what that amount would be.

I know the IRS does not want any notes or questions along with the tax return forms.

How can I ask the IRS?
