My mother is in a nursing home and is immobile. She wears diapers and has had numerous UTI's. She has been bleeding vaginally. What could be the cause?
Unfortunately she should also be evaluated for cancer. Take her to a gynecologist. If she is not able to be moved, talk to the internist for the NH and s/he can have her evaluated. It could be something as simple as fibroids, but any vaginal bleeding after menopause has to be evaluated for cancer.
She will need a complete internal exam to find out if this is infection and what type. It would help to know if she has had a history of fibroids, ovarian cysts or abnormal pap smears or a hysterectomy in the past.
Another thought, I remember now that you can have some bleeding with bladder infection, I used to get them when I was younger and this happened. Also, if mom is incontinent, she could have a rash and chaffing, and itch the area and it could bleed. Just simpler reasons than thinking cancer.
